The KH value, also known as Carbonate Hardness, consists of the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in the water. These components ensure that the pH value (acidity) is kept sufficiently high. During the conversion of waste products in the filter, hydrogen (H+) is released. Hydrogen is an acid and can cause the acidity (pH) to drop to a dangerous level.

The KH prevents this drop in acidity. The bi(carbonates) neutralize the released hydrogen. However, these (bi)carbonates are lost in the process. Therefore, the KH in a pond will decrease as a result of the breakdown of waste products. When the KH drops below 2 degrees German Hardness, the pH will start to fluctuate. If the KH is completely used up, the released hydrogen will directly affect the pH. This can happen so quickly that the pH drops to a deadly value of below pH 5 within a few hours. Most pond fish will not survive this.

It is therefore very important to measure the KH and ensure that it never drops more than 1 degree below the KH value of the tap water. This can be done with sodium bicarbonate or with KH+. Remember that if the tap water has a low KH, the user will have to re-dose when changing water to maintain the KH level. We also recommend a KH value between 5 and 10.
